And this how it all started... Head Lines Naples Daily News Reads March 19 2008
Authorities needed to help control Keewaydin Island abusers, official says
There goes another long time hang out. Before too long they will ban boaters from going there.

The best place to let your dog get out, socialize, swim & get some "Free roaming exercize" and they want to end it all. The rich folks who want to develop the Island are trying to keep the Riff Raff away.

choppergirl:
It'd be easier to fight if that were the case.
Unfortunately, the management at Rookery Bay operates under a set of state and federal guidelines put in place to protect natural areas. And while there's nothing "natural" about the south end of Keewaydin, it does fall within the reserve's boundaries.
It isn't fair to say that the appointed and hired personnel on Shell Island Road consider the reserve their private park, but I can assure you they protect it as though it is.
NaplesCracker is right: There goes another longtime hangout. But you no doubt remember the reserve management's removal of the Australian pines on Coconut Island and its subsequent disappearance from the mouth of the Marco River. You can't just camp on the beach at Cape Romano or Lostman's anymore, either. Not like the old days. Say goodbye to the wild places, and whether we lose them to developers or park rangers, the results are the same and so is the cause: too many people.
The dog and sun lovers on Keewaydin thus join the four-wheelers of the Picayune Strand, and the campers in the Big Cypress before them, and those who remembered when Loop Road and Halfway Creek were a world apart. They can tip a hat to the folks who used to barbecue chicken over bonfires on Vanderbilt Beach, when a dune as high as an office building stood blocks to the east of the Gulf and to those who watched for the green flash through the big window at Chuck's Poorhouse -- before the county stole it for a public park.
The rich people were here in those days, and they never bothered anybody. What's ruined the place are the wannabe-rich, the ones from Ohio who've been here 20 years and never met a native, the ones who gripe and fuss about every aspect of the place that doesn't conform to their prepackaged, real-estate hustler-inspired fantasy of what Naples should be.
They couldn't wait to start changing it, and they found plenty of eager sellers among the natives to help them along.
Drive into Naples from the East Trail these days and what do you see?
Some people see a patch of dirt where Antamarian plans to build another ostentatious shrine to "making it."
Others of us see a plain dirt battleground memorializing one of the few Collier County traditions I'm afraid has survived.
Some call it good business. Some call it selling out. Either way, the result is the same.

elnuestros, I was going to say the same thing about losing a place to ride the atv's out in the Picayune. Those were some fun times.
I also remember the dunes on Vanderbilt and also on Marco Island when you could have a fire and cookout.
Very well said statement elnuestros! You stated exactly what's been on my mind lately about the way this town has changed and not for the better.
#4 Posted by NaplesCracker on March 19, 2008 at 6:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Well the town has changed... there are a hell of a lot more people here than before when it was Bubba and his wife/sister Elma. As for the beach I for one would not like to walk the beach having to look out for your dogs droppings. Its bad enough having to look out for the diapers that you so thoughtlessly leave where ever they may fall. Deal with it, its called progress and no the south will not rise again.

I remember all those things too NaplesCracker!! Were showing our age by admitting that, but it does seem their taking everything that was "fun" away from us for the almighty dollar. I also remember driving down on the beach on Marco in the middle of the night by the old tracking station, fishing from the rocks there, campfires on the deadend roads way out in the estates, parking and just gathering together at the Winn-Dixie on Central....all of which would NEVER be allowed now-a-days. Weekends on Keewaydin was always a good time. Too bad......and then sometimes people wonder why kids today have resorted to video games????What the heck else are they allowed to do????

Can't think of any place I'd rather be on a nice weekend day than drinking out at Keywaddin. Sounds like they just want to curtail littering and people walking across the vegetation to get to the Gulf side. I think there was something in the article about installing docks on the east side though?...that's worrisome. I guess you could make a case that someday they'll try to take it all away, to that I say, "Not in my 'Merica."

Keewaydin is still nice weekdays and esp. during summer. Outside when gulf is calm is really sweet place to anchor. Very rare to see more than 10-15 boats there.
Sliding economy w/ job losses, high gas prices, falling real estate prices, closing businesses mean fewer and fewer will be going to beach as often.
#19 Posted by beachrunner on March 20, 2008 at 8:43 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I'm down there almost every Sunday. What I don't understand the people who say they've actually seen a diaper just left on the beach?? I have NEVER seen such disregard for that place. What I do see are people, mostly young, having a good time. I see people bringing their own garbage bags and USING them. This makes no sense. I hope that when/if they ban boaters down there whoever bans us will take over my boat payment, because there goes the VERY reason we bought a boat. For people like me working 6 days a week, I look forward to my weekly Sunday trek down to Keeywadin for some fun and entertainment. What a joke. I was born and raised here and I cannot believe that this staple of relaxation in my life is possibly going to be restricted.

"Florida wildlife officers are planning to beef up law enforcement at a popular boater hangout on the southern end of Keewaydin Island" It was brought to their attention that people were actually enjoying themselves. Also, it was reported, these people were not spending the requested $300 to $400 per day , per person , that we need. ;-)

#22 Posted by CutthroatConservative on March 20, 2008 at 9:34 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Eltuna, I would have no issue with your comment if it were the actual problem. Naples turning from a nice town, to the cess pool of egotistical, money grubbing, self-righteous a-holes had nothing to do with locals like myself.
It had everything to do with the people who moved here from everywhere else. That is undeniable truth.
Oh and for the record ...my wife and I have one child. So I guess since the two of us are being replaced by only one ....I still have every right to talk by your book.
#23 Posted by mikeinnaples on March 20, 2008 at 9:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Mike, I'm sure we have. The other thing that irks me is the statement that "Boaters still would be able to pull up unrestricted on the Gulf beach, Lytton said." what about those of us who have small boats, not designed for Gulf Waters. We don't even travel the shortcut through the pass at the tip to get to Marco Pass. We have a small deck boat, bought purely for traveling down from the city dock down to Keeywadin with our cooler, our shade tent and a radio. If they really want to make this about the environment then have some patrols ticketing the litters (albeit few) and make a statement. If you want to enjoy this area, then take care of it. I know I do, as well as 99% of the regulars down there. I'm sure some of the regulars would pitch in and do a monthly clean up or something like that to appease the enviro's. I know I don't want to spend my Sunday's looking at somebody else’s trash. But seriously, make the issue what it’s really about: The Keeywadin property owners, the private developer and the city. Let’s put down all the smoke and mirrors and stop using nature as your front, we all see through it.
#24 Posted by emmydevoe on March 20, 2008 at 9:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I agree with Emmy wholeheartedly. I too visit Keewaydin most weekends, and I can personally attest that the claims of rampant diapers and trash are simply untrue or, at a minimum, greatly exaggerated. I ALWAYS use a trash bag to clean up after myself, and when I encounter the occasional stray bottle cap, I pick that up as well. The only thing I leave behind is my footprints in the sand. And now the regulators are contemplating building docks.....geez.

*Correction: I mistakenly addressed my comment to Mike, should have been Mr. Conservative. Wow, I agree with a Conservative, thats one reason to keep Keeywadin as it is, people actually get along down there! Ha!

El, Emmy, Mike, your all right on the mark. I have been going down to Keewaydin for 30 years. I do no see diapers and the like there either and most everyone I see takes care of their trash. I hang a trash bag on the fron of my boat and yeah, people who pass by sometimes use it too, but I'm ok with that.

I too am frequently down on Keeywadien on the weekends enjoying one of the few isolated places where fellow boaters can enjoy themselves. The only time of the year that I have witnessed this so-called "abuse" is during the canoe races. One humorous sidenote...could you imagine trying to accomodate 100's of boaters with a few proposed docks? Please.
It seems that everytime we turn around as boaters, there is some new proposal to restrict our usage of the waterways. What every happened to the recommendations restricting usage in backwaters of the 10,0000 islands?
Point is, there are always going to be individuals that are not going to follow the rules. Are we really going to punish the 99% of us that do?
#28 Posted by Rickdiculous on March 20, 2008 at 10:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)
emmydevoe, I used to boat to Keeywadin when I could have the whole south end to myself. I haven't been back in a few years because it made me sick to boat over on a Monday or Tuesday and find the mess left there. I filled almost a full 30 gallon trash bag the last time. So there is need for more control. I've found a place out West a lot like Naples was back in the 60's, sans Gulf, but lots of pristine mountain and valley lakes. One that I fish, many times I'm the only one on the lake. The people are laid back and extremely friendly. Makes me think I'm going to wake up and find myself in an updated episode of the Twilight Zone episode "Willoughby, Willoughby, next stop Willoughby". No, I won't say where it is; I hope it's never "discovered" as was Naples.
#29 Posted by 676 on March 20, 2008 at 10:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)
The bad part is this is only the beginning. Just like NPS trying to ban boats from the Everglades National Park, soon not only will your beach access disappear but so will your boat access. The Cape Romano shoals will close about the same time as the beach, after that will be the creeks through the mangroves. Creeping incrementalism, soon it will all be gone.
#30 Posted by swampbuggy on March 20, 2008 at 10:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I have never seen trash, including diapers etc. litterd along the beach there either. Commonidiots was talking out his backside, probably never has been down there and just wanted to get us riled up over the situation.
Keewaydin is my relaxation haven to let go of allthe stress of the work week hang out with the family and my friends. We don't go down there to tear it up. You can see folks of every age relaxing, and having fun out there.
We need to ban together to try and keep this last little piece of Naples from being taken away like all of the other fun places have been.
As Native said, no wonder why kids today have resorted to video games! There no where left to have a good time!
#31 Posted by NaplesCracker on March 20, 2008 at 11 a.m. (Suggest removal)
There is an easy fix. Place trash cans on the island, there have to be many sitting around as they buy new ones for 5th avenue every 6 months. Create a walking path to cross the island (the spurs hurt anyways) to not disturb the land and allow people to pass from side to side. Instead of having officers placed on the island, have them empty the trash once a day. The other option for Mayor Billy and Jack the builder are to spend thousands of our tax dollars to fight us and lose again. The tax payers will win as we are the ones with louder voices. Keep it clean and lets enjoy as much as possible. See you down there tomorrow.
#32 Posted by Bnboatn on March 20, 2008 at 11:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Ok, this is now getting ridiculous. those of you that have been to the island lately may have noticed the sherriff boats telling and fining dog owners for not having dogs on a leash. Great use of taxpayers dollars. Who are these people trying to take over Keywadin, bleading heart bird loving whack job liberals from the north with poor excuses for jobs and hobbies.
When I am at key wadin, I can not simply walk, or trample as they say, across the dunes. Have you ever tried it, with a dog no less? There are burrs everywhere, that is why we use the handy hiking trail????
Who is this so called advisory group? Are they disguising themselves as us normal folk when they are on the island because i sure as heck don't see a gaggle of tree huggers out there on saturday or Sunday protecting the land and studying how we are ruing it, just the sherriff boat ocoassionally and the poor guys on it who were sent there to tell people to put their dog on a leash.
Oh, and if you read the article above, the "Officers" that will be on duty this weekend are "volunteers". So when you see them this weekend, give them a piece of your mind because they are "VOLOUNTEERS" of "TEAM OCEAN" and they are the ones looking to close down this spot for us. Make sure you hold them hostage with your opinions, manipulate their time, talk their ears off, come on, we can do this!!! Make those "TEAM OCEAN VOLOUNTEERS" time out there NOT SO F"UN, make sure to point out :
The lack of garbage out there The lack of people trampling the preserve The people who are using the trail and staying on it
As a matter of fact, take their shoes and socks away from them and throw them in the middle of the preserve and ask them how enjoyable the burrs are on their feet and then ask them what lunatics they think are out there trampling the preserve???
This is a group of probably 10 grumpy people making this their life mission because they are the only ones that will listen to eachother. When we are keywadin, we are, I would bet, a MUCH larger group than these tree huggers AND I bet we can have a much larger voice than them if we put it to use!!
Come on all, what do you say???

Emmy, Mike, BignRich, Cutthroat.. We have all surely crossed paths.. I also go to Keeywaydin I was actually there this Sunday and we barbeque off our boat, take trash bags and have one tied to the front end of our boat and one in the boat. BignRich is right people walk by and even put their trash in their. JunkYardDog.. I moved here from the East Coast and this is nothing like it. People here in the most part respect the beach and one another. I love Keeywadin and can't imagine them taking that away from us too.

I guess you are all now feeling how we, the ORV families feel when you are not allowed on public lands and how you are automatically deemed "incompatible" with nature. Just so that everyone knows, Captain Hordam's wife works at the Rookery bay center, however did anyone hear Rookery bay complain about the condo's that are going up right next to them???? Could it be that Rookery bay took money from the Condo developer the same way that the Florida wildlife federation took money from the Bonita group????

was it one of the "VOLUNTEER OFFICERS" that removed my post?
If we want to change things people, you can not stifle valid words and opinions!
AGAIN::
i think when we see one of Lytton's "Volunteers" from team OCEAN this weekend, you need to realize this person is one of the people trying to shut down our island.
It is our responsibility to fairly debate with them the 1. LACK OF TRASH 2. LACK OF DIAPERS 3. Lack of people trashing the dunes
These volunteers are donating their time to kick us off the island. I am there every weekend and I see no one from this committe doing studies, surveys etc. to back up their claims.
This is the USA!! Come on people, we can do it!

You better add to the article some instructions. Tell them to call their county commissioner and fight the city's annexation. The city is going to be the "tool" for them to implement this. Second call needs to be to your state and federal Reps. and Senators. The most effective way to stop this is to threaten their share of annual funding.

I love this comment in the article "Some boaters’ abuse the southern end of Keewaydin Island and disturb wildlife, trample native habitat and pose a human safety concern, he said."
Well some small percentage of the population abuses just about everything relating to the environment...from national, state and local parks to coral reefs and the beaches. So local officals propose that the rest of us conscientious, tax-paying and full-time residents, should all just stay away from these settings and view them from afar or better yet, from the penthouse of some new condo. Such hypocricy!!

I feel sorry for some of you who may loose your wilderness. I have the luxury of spending most of my time out of the US. Jamaica has all the freedom in the world I need. When I am in the US, I spend time outside of Venice..where we still have those old fashioned places where you can be in the wilderness without hassle, by the water really. Islands like Keewaydin. And to think, about 8 years ago, I sold my place on the water up here to move to Naples for the time I do spend in the US (it is a bit more tropical and closer to my airports). Anyway, that lasted 6 months..Got rid of the house and came back up to Venice....

My dad is Gary DeVoe and my mom is Mary Engel. I love the stories, but to protect the innocent I think your right JYD, here isn't the forum. :) BTV I'm proud of who they are, so while I certainly have no obligation, I'm not one of the bloggers who hide my identity. Anything I say on here I would say to your face.

When I talk about all the things I used to do as a child and teenager, my kids are amazed and can't believe it. They will never be able to do the things that we could do back in the day.
They have had a little taste of the things that have been taken away from them that they had enjoyed. That being the Picayune riding area. We would go down there and camp, ride atv's, fish, etc. when the kids were 3 & 4 years old and now 10 years later we are banned from the area. So they feel a little bit of the pain.

What a shame. Had some great memories there Next thing they will be doing is trying to get rid of the Great Dock Canoe races...only a matter of time before some stuck up Port Royal/Royal Harbor homeowners complain about the water balloons too many people peeing in the bay and all the water toys. I was back in town last week. Man an overpass, Shopping centers galore Miami Jr in the making...Best thing I did was get out of Naples and buy a waterfront home in Charlotte Harbor. Trips to Cayo Costa, Cabbage key, Boca Grande, Stump Pass Paradise destinations for boaters and NO One bothers you..Long live the OLD Naples

Knee high eh? Thanks for the compliment on my family JYD, its appreciated. I won't state what year I graduated, I don't want to make anyone rush out the door and buy a sportscar to feel young again. I kid, I kid.
I emailed those that sent me emails last night, I'm going to gather as much information I can about the proposal for Keeywadin, as well as the groups that are behind it. I've got a pretty busy weekend ahead of me, but I will spend the first part of next week on it. Hopefully by Wed-Thurs I can have some hard factual information (and the NDN will want to hire me as a reporter, aghast!) and we can have something together for the boating weekend. I'll bring my camera and take pictures of all the GIGANTIC holes, MOUNDS of diapers and unruly beasts leaving GIANT cesspools of feces (and the NDN will want to hire me as a photojournalist, aghast!).
Again, my email address is emmydevoe@comcast.net if you'd like to get involved in making sure not only Keeywadin is protected as a part of the Naples lifestyle we all enjoy, but also to educate our fellow boaters to take care of it as well. I think we should strive to make sure that 100% of the people that go down there take care of it, which I think is just as important as the fight to keep it accessible by all.

I remember the Naples when there was, keggers at the pier, quail hunting in Pelican Bay, Motocross on Radio Road, skinny dipping summer nights in the Port Royal pools, Saturday nights at the Bindlestiff tavern, Snook fishing in the boathouse at the end of Gordon Drive, pancakes at Dolly's, camping for weeks in the Fakahatchee, Hookers doing business with the weekend hunters on Janes Scenic Drive, Drag racing on Green Blvd., Parties with live music on Rookery Bay road, the Hooplafest, naked girls down from Ohio suntanning on the beach north of Clam Pass, riding by bicycle down US 41 at night with no traffic but me, traveling to Ft. Myers to buy bluejeans, no Bikers except Frank Lang and Al Bolton, Al's Aquarium, Movies on 3rd St, the stupid yellow jacket forever on display at Kepps Mens Shop, Jack Su's on 5th, Guns in the truck window, cold beers on the dash, and cops that would drive you home.

I truly do love the folks who moved down from up North to just lay back and enjoy themselves after leaving the rat race. Like most of us they realize that there has to be some small amount of control about what can go on where but hate when the "damnyankees" start in.
Like most of us oldtimers and true transplants they just want to be left alone and enjoy the bit of peace and quiet they can find. We all clean up after ourselves and take responciblity for what we do.
Then the "This is how we do it up North..." bunch showed up and everything went down hill.
Thanks for the civilization..ya bastiches.

It is sooooo easy. Just "leave it as you found it" and "pack it in, pack it out". You won't lose anything if you abide by those common rules of decency. The special place is a rarity, so treat it as such. Then nothing will change.

I have lived in Naples since 1960 and all the things that have changed in the years that I have lived here are mostly to accommodate the rich folk. if conservation is truly the first concerns of all the Conservation Commissions it's to late the damage is done you destroyed it when all the high-rise buildings where built on the beaches of Naples. Port Royal land did not exist it was all the fill that was striped from the land and dumped to make more waterfront property for the rich and all the mangroves that where ripped out so Mr. Big could park his big boat in his backyard and the funny thing is that that was ok. If you want to show the real people in the community start by restoring the native lands of the Naples beaches and park shore beaches. Until you do that leave the rest of Naples the way it was. PS. I do not believe that Bill Barnett has anything to do with this. And for all the old timers here lets not forget the old movie theater on 3rd and the fun in the elevator across the street and also the old Dog and Suds on 41.

Bigtwinvhf: your comments in #90 about the environmental regulators are great You are 100% right on target on this. The problem is that DEP and the others are heavily influenced by political muscle. They are one of the worst departments when it comes to regulation. This is by design of the legislature and Governors (past and present) as they capitulate to those who lobby for the developers and similar industries. Nature is the furthest thing from their mind when it comes to policy making. Many who join such agencies start out as idealists wanting to make a difference. They make poor wages (another article by the AP appeared today in the paper indicating how bad it is for those who do choose to work for the State) and have little job security anymore so expertise and institutional knowledge have been wiped out.
Sad for us all. We need to demand better. We need environmental policies which serve the land and the everyman...not just the wealthy. We need environmental sustainability combined with economic sustainability which is an achievable goal if not so politicized.

Thanks cupcake and JunkYardDog. You brought back some good memories.
I was trying to think of a couple to add myself. How about these?
Bull Pen Bar on 5th Ave N
Viking Tavern on North 41
Even Odds (Big Daddys)
Driving Jeeps on what is now Park Shore Beach where all the high rises are now.
Central Mall (WinnDixie, McCory's)
Flaming Fountain (41 near 4th Ave N)
Pancake Palace
Sambo's on Davis Blvd
Fires were allowed on the beach
The railroad tracks that ran along Goodlette Rd
The police dept and jail was downtown next to city hall
Poinciana Village on Airport Rd was considered out in the boondocks and Golden Gate was the other end of the world
The corner of Pine Ridge and Airport Roads was a 4 way stop and Pine Ridge was a lime rock road east of Airport.
Well thats my contribution. Cheers

Swap Shop every Saturday on WNOG.
#103 Posted by myrealname on March 23, 2008 at 4:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)
WNOG use to be a great locally run radio station. It's nothing more than syndicated garbage all day now.
How about the other local stations, WRGI, WCVU and WLEQ. That is about all there was to listen to back then. Most of the Ft Myers stations were not powerful enough to get a signal into Naples. There was always WQAM out of Miami too.
People don't believe you when you tell them that the swamp buggy track and a stock car track were on Radio Rd. Remember when the Collier County Fair was held there too?
After the Naples Theater closed there was the Kon Tiki Theater at the old Central Mall.
The more I think about this the more old stuff I remember.

You bet swfl....But before the Kon Tiki was the newest theater in town was the one on the corner of 41 and Kelly Rd. aka (Bayshore Rd.) with sparkling red chairs that also rocked...I saw Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid there in "69".....Fun stuff...Black lights and Steppenwolf posters! Oh and don't forget the Maze...The store next to W.T.Grants across from where the mall is now! Wow all those bean bag chairs and psychedelic lights. I'm trippin' dude!
LOL :)

Grant City at Naples Shopping Center. That was about the first big store in Naples I think. Of course there was American Dept Store at Gulf Gate near the theater (I forgot about those rocking chairs). There was another discount store in Gulf Gate. I think it was called TG&Y. All the junk your money could buy.
There were only a few grocery stores around then too. Publix at Naples Shopping Center and Gulf Gate, Winn Dixie at Central Mall and 7th Ave N, and the two Sunshine Markets on US41 and on 5th Ave S.
How about Ingram's Hardware on 5th Ave. Also of course there was the old Rexall on 5th and Leggetts Drugs at Naples Shopping Center.
I thought about a few of the restaurants that have come and gone. Paddlewheel, Clam Shack, Picadilly Pub, Witches Brew, JP's. There were also the two cafeterias in town. One at Four Corners and one where the Red Lobster is now.
The longer I think the more old stuff I remember. It is hard to explain to newcomers just how things were around here a long time ago.

Sounds good BRW....Across the sreet from Pewter Mug and alittle bit south on 41 was Stuckys or A Hornes....Can't remember which it was but the building still stands as some sort of wierd night club as of now! Remember old 41 thru Bontia was the only way to Ft.M. ahhhh the Dome on the corner of east Terry st. Do you remember the filming of the TV show on Marco called Caribbe. It was a detective show in the very early 70's starring Stacey Keach I believe? Maybe lasted one season.
#115 Posted by JunkYardDog on March 24, 2008 at 3:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Did the Pewter Mug close up? It was opened the last time I was by there. That was a great place for a steak and great salad bar. Use to be one of our favorites. That and Pippin's were the best steak houses in town.
Thought of a few more old places. The dinner at the old bus station just south of Four Corners, Bud's Dinner on 41 at 5th Ave N, Sutton House before that it was the Tropics Drive Inn if I remember right. The Clock Restaurant use to be at 3rd Ave N, Howard Johnson's on 41 just north of Four Corners.
Keep em coming.

Thats funny stuff swfl,I used to wash dishes at Bud's Diner for Bud and Betty Rice in the morning from 6:00am till 11:30am and then thumb a ride to Naples High and do split session classes from 12:15pm till 5:00pm my freshman and sohpmore years.....That sucked! Then at night bussed tables at La Playa till 11:00pm and do all again the next day...Now that really sucked!
#118 Posted by JunkYardDog on March 24, 2008 at 4:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)
That schedule did suck JYD. It's funny how we did what we had to to survive.
Split shifts at Naples High what a circus that was. Seniors and Juniors in the morning and underclassmen in the afternoon. And people think that there isn't much learning going on in the schools now? They should have seen that mess.
#119 Posted by swfl_ff on March 24, 2008 at 5:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)
But we did skip school and ride our dirt bikes where Coastland mall is now....with no G.G.Parkway and mall, just woods and fun! What a blast from the past!
#120 Posted by JunkYardDog on March 24, 2008 at 5:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)
The woods where the mall is now was a great hiding spot. There were times I think that half of Naples High was hiding over there instead of being in school.
GG Parkway ended at Goodlette Rd across from the football field and the railroad tracks. Remember what GG Parkway was called back then? Goodlette Road Extension. Where it crossed Airport Rd I remember there only being flashing red lights and a four way stop.

I do remember when GG Parkway was'nt even there. You had to go Davis Blvd. or Immokalee Rd. to get to GG City...Golden Gate Scout Troop 169...
#124 Posted by JunkYardDog on March 25, 2008 at 6:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)
The western end of Golden Gate Parkway was at Santa Barbara Blvd. Does anyone remember when it was extended west to meet up with Goodlette Extension at Airport Rd?
I have been told by a lot of real oldtimers that to get to Golden Gate city when it was first built you had to go out Radio Rd as Davis Blvd did not go all the way east to CR951. Not sure when Davis was extended east. Anyone know that too?
#125 Posted by swfl_ff on March 25, 2008 at 9:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)
They finished Davis Blvd east ext when Alligator Alley aka hwy 84 was built in 66-67 and before that it was only 41 to get to the east coast from Naples.
You used to have too take 92 to get to Marco and go across the old wooden bridge at Goodland until the Collier Blvd/951 bridge was built in 69ish

#127 Posted by orele on March 25, 2008 at 4:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Thanks JYD. I knew it was sometime back in that time period just not exactly when.
I remember that old swing bridge at Goodland. The only way on and off Marco until the 951 bridge was built. Remember when the 951 bridge was toll? That was the only time that I can think of when a toll was actually removed once the road was paid for. I think the toll came off in the late 70's.

You could also get to Golden Gate if you took the limerock Pine Ridge "road" all the way out to where it ended and then went through the ditch to get on that street that runs to Logan.

swfl_ff; Yup and the toll was 10 cents....Wow
emmy....Glad you chimed in, and yes, you're right. That was pre I-75...Bet your Dad took you there thru the ditch/canal, which is now Vineyard Blvd aka Oaks Blvd in his jeep.
Ahhhh the Seminole Saloon...Now where North Naples CC is...God I Love this stuff! It was nothing more than a big screened porch with pool tables.
#132 Posted by JunkYardDog on March 25, 2008 at 8:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Yes, the Seminole. Great place as JYD stated nothing more that a big screened porch. I think it was built before AC was a common thing. Don't forget Toots Vanderbilt Hide a Way. Just up the street from the Seminole.
I use to use that old Pine Ridge short cut. It went out to what is now Livingston. I think it was called Daniels Rd back then. You went north on that to where you could cut across to Oakes Blvd (now Vineyards Blvd). Then Oakes took you south to 10th Ave SW which took you to Logan Blvd. Logan went south to Green. Back then Logan dead ended where it currently meets Vanderbilt Beach Rd. Not much of a short cut once you navigated all those old limerock roads was it.
I remember when Oakes Blvd use to flood over everytime there was a good rain.

Blogger would be the way to go. Emmy or a computer person could start it and then everyone could leave comments. Moderating the comments "might" be a good idea just in case.
I have my hands full with business blogs right now, but Blogger is easy to do even for someone who isn't real into technology. Anyone out there who could start a Blog and then post the link?

Well done, you beat me to it. I was changing diapers when I stopped setting up a blog. Well Done. I would cut and paste all this ^^^ before NDN tanks it as it is full of good stuff and we can keep going and add pix. I would also give a banner ad to the NDN for paying for our inception. They would probably do a story on it as it is to their credit and then we would be FLOODED with input and who knows, this could be the start of the taking back of Naples. Something has to give, and I think it just did. Organize people!

Well I hate to actually start this thing, but let crank her up and see how she runs.
I wish everyone could have experienced what some of us lived back in what I call the real Naples. It truly was fun to live here then. We did things Like camp on any beach we wanted south of Gordons pass and north of Doctors pass. Nobody ever bothered us an we did'nt bother them,so I guess what I'm concerned about is Government taking away one more place we can't play ie. Keewaydin Island. I just wish some things where the same as back then. Wiggins Pass State Park was A prime place to have fun also, when it was'nt A State Park.....We packed our garb up when we left,we did'nt burn down anything and had good clean fun. I think the worst thing I saw was someone jumping Clam Pass in A P/U truck that did'nt make it across the pass. But of course that pass is only 10 or 20 ft. across most of the time. For the most part we were pretty respectful teens and young adults.
Here's my link to some old naples pics. I have'nt taged them but will. I've got more in time. http://pictures.aol.com/galleries/circle3ranch@hotmail.com/bd30ZrW9m2MxPUsGpLXmGTCuq61YFfxGtgfJv4xQp5Fd3Ig=
Then send your email address to iremembernapleswhen@comcast.net to be added as a author. This site is created by long time residents of Naples looking to keep the best memories of Naples alive.
Please keep this site free of meanness. I mean it. Be nice.

"Florida wildlife officers are planning to beef up law enforcement at a popular boater hangout on the southern end of Keewaydin Island"
It was brought to their attention that people were actually enjoying themselves. Also, it was reported, these people were not spending the requested $300 to $400 per day , per person , that we need.
;-)

#27 Posted by BignRich on March 20, 2008 at 10:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)
The lack of garbage out there
The lack of people trampling the preserve
The people who are using the trail and staying on it
As a matter of fact, take their shoes and socks away from them and throw them in the middle of the preserve and ask them how enjoyable the burrs are on their feet and then ask them what lunatics they think are out there trampling the preserve???

AGAIN::
i think when we see one of Lytton's "Volunteers" from team OCEAN this weekend, you need to realize this person is one of the people trying to shut down our island.
It is our responsibility to fairly debate with them the
1. LACK OF TRASH
2. LACK OF DIAPERS

BignRich, it's west and north of here, LOL. I ain't tellin, and April 1st I'm headin that way.
Took me years to find a "long-time-ago Naples". Heck, even still has a 100 year old "sarsaparilla" shop, Coke floats and all.

That’s fine with me bikes! Being born and raised here and my family here since 1968 I feel like all the things I enjoyed as a kid aren't going to be around when I have my own here - which is a shame, because I think I'm on of the few Naples Brat's that has always loved it here and never itched to get out. I'll check my email when I get home and we'll go from there.

I'm a little too much like my Dad, and I love hearing all his stories about what it was like when Naples was really Naples. He retired and sold his house and moved to an awesome little town in Vermont about 2 years ago. He has an antique shop now.
Thats beside the point, but yes..they are very proud of me. Both my mother and father have deep roots here, and sometimes when I meet people they laugh when they here who I'm a combination of.

I remember the Naples when there was,
keggers at the pier,
quail hunting in Pelican Bay,
Motocross on Radio Road,
skinny dipping summer nights in the Port Royal pools,
Saturday nights at the Bindlestiff tavern,
Snook fishing in the boathouse at the end of Gordon Drive,
pancakes at Dolly's,
camping for weeks in the Fakahatchee,
Hookers doing business with the weekend hunters on Janes Scenic Drive,
Drag racing on Green Blvd.,
Parties with live music on Rookery Bay road,
the Hooplafest,
naked girls down from Ohio suntanning on the beach north of Clam Pass,
riding by bicycle down US 41 at night with no traffic but me,
traveling to Ft. Myers to buy bluejeans,
no Bikers except Frank Lang and Al Bolton,
Al's Aquarium,
Movies on 3rd St,
the stupid yellow jacket forever on display at Kepps Mens Shop,
Jack Su's on 5th,
Guns in the truck window,
cold beers on the dash,
and cops that would drive you home.

Amen cupcake.
And the Bindlestiff,
Open Hearth,
Big Daddy's,
and don't let me forget the Anchor on the corner of hwy41 and 3rd St. S.
Or the Swampbuggy Lounge...
Silver Dollar Saloon,
Jack's Corner Pocket,
Or the 4 lane hwy that stopped at old trail Dr. and 41....
Keep the mems coming....
Got more mems!
But they can't take that away from me....

Cheers

While I'm at it...The Swampbuggy and Stock car tracks on Radio Rd.....And thats why they called it Radio Rd. Because the only radio station around was WNOG...AM..Wonderful-Naples-On-the-Gulf. The Lynn Bailey show daily in the morning...Soooo Boring.

I was talking about the Coast Federal fountain but, I remember the Park Shore fountain too.
I saw "Grease" at the N. Naples Drive-in.....Went to the stock car races every Saturday night with my grandpa....and my dad rode a barrel horse when they used to have rodeo's on that same land.

#104 Posted by swfl_ff on March 23, 2008 at 8:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)
LOL :)

Zips ice cream across the way from Kon Tiki. I remember watching "Billy Jack" there.
Watching the Skipper Chuck show.
Jeez, we need our own website for Naples blue collar memories. Drive the snobs crazy!
I hope NDN doesn't tank this before we have a place to post. It's amazing how fast we collected memories. There's power in numbers folks.
And yes I soaped the fountain but it was key to add blue food coloring. Mr. Bond knew it was me.

The old Train trussle bridge was in there and crossed the Cocohatchee Creek and what A swimming hole that was! Jump-n-fun....

They finished Davis Blvd east ext when Alligator Alley aka hwy 84 was built in 66-67 and before that it was only 41 to get to the east coast from Naples.
You used to have too take 92 to get to Marco and go across the old wooden bridge at Goodland until the Collier Blvd/951 bridge was built in 69ish

Does anyone know if flyers were handed out this weekend?
#127 Posted by orele on March 25, 2008 at 4:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Thanks JYD. I knew it was sometime back in that time period just not exactly when.
I remember that old swing bridge at Goodland. The only way on and off Marco until the 951 bridge was built. Remember when the 951 bridge was toll? That was the only time that I can think of when a toll was actually removed once the road was paid for. I think the toll came off in the late 70's.

No, flyers were not handed out this past weekend. I am working on getting some together for this weekend.

You could also get to Golden Gate if you took the limerock Pine Ridge "road" all the way out to where it ended and then went through the ditch to get on that street that runs to Logan.

You are leaving out the bars. The Seminole Saloon, the Swampbuggy Lounge.

swfl_ff; Yup and the toll was 10 cents....Wow
emmy....Glad you chimed in, and yes, you're right.

Circle3Ranch aka @ NDN JunkYardDog
Off to work and I will upload some pix this afternoon.
Nice job Emmy! NDN needs to do an article on this momentous event!
They need to pass along the URL so others can share.
The pump is primed...so don't get me started!
aka @ NDN JunkYardDog
Here's my link to some old naples pics. I have'nt taged them but will. I've got more in time.
